How Important are HIEs in Public Health?
Direct exchange, Query-based and Consumers Mediated exchange are three forms of health information exchanges. Direct exchange is how providers easily and securely sends patient information, including patient referrals, laboratory orders and results, and discharge summaries, to another health care professional or facility. This exchange can prevent duplicate testing, repeatedly collecting the same information and medication errors. Query based exchanges allow providers to search and access clinical information on a patient. It is used to deliver unplanned care, such as by emergency room physicians. The physician can access the patient's medications, radiology images and list of problems on record. Consumer mediated exchange allows patients to access their own health information. Patients can go online to perform task, such as correcting wrong information or to provide missing health information. How to Estimate the Cost of Building an HIE Software System? According to HealthIT.gov, an electronic health record (EHR) can cost from $15 to $70 thousand for a provider. Web based deployment is done through software as a service (SaaS) with a monthly fee. If built on site, the provider is required to pay for ongoing support, maintenance and on site data servers.
